SayMei at a glance
SayMei is an AI-powered Chinese learning product built around Mei Lin, a live Mandarin tutor that helps learners practice conversation with synchronized Pinyin and translations, pronunciation feedback, structured lessons, and progress-aware guidance.

These figures describe cumulative activity across the complete SayMei product. The Spatius rollout is more recent and should not be presented as the sole driver of these totals.
The challenge: voice alone did not feel fully face-to-face
SayMei already had the foundation of a useful language tutor: live conversation, Mandarin teaching expertise, and lessons that adapt to each learner.
But a speaking lesson is also a visual experience. When the loading state, classroom, and live avatar feel disconnected, the learner is reminded that they are moving between systems instead of entering one continuous lesson.
SayMei wanted Mei Lin to feel present from the moment a learner chose a lesson—not only after the voice session had already started.

Tested in production, not just in a demo
Before moving to production, SayMei compared three avatar experiences inside the same live Mandarin lesson flow: its previous avatar provider and two different Spatius avatars.
The comparison looked at learner engagement and startup performance, including conversation turns, email-profile creation, and the time from lesson entry to the first audible tutor interaction. Within the observed cohort, learners in the Spatius Pink experience averaged 12 conversation turns, compared with 7 in the previous avatar experience. They also created email profiles at a higher rate—60% versus 40%.
The startup measurements also surfaced an opportunity to make the transition into live lessons smoother by moving avatar loading earlier in the learner journey.
Moving Spatius Pink into production
The migration was about more than changing the avatar. SayMei focused on creating one continuous experience from lesson entry to live conversation:
- Made Spatius Pink the default avatar for Mei Lin in live lessons.
- Introduced a warm Mandarin classroom background.
- Began loading Spatius earlier in the learner journey, starting from the homepage, before learners entered the live lesson.
- Aligned the loading state and transition with the live tutor across devices.
The result is a more coherent lesson journey: learners move into the conversation with the same tutor and visual setting, while earlier loading makes the transition feel smoother and less like a handoff between separate systems.
Mei Lin remains visually consistent across desktop and mobile.

A more cohesive speaking-practice experience
For SayMei, the value was a more complete learning experience—not a new teaching system.
